About Us

The Joseph King Trust is an educational charity that supports young people going to university, higher education college, apprenticeships or taking part in special educational events or projects.
Joseph King was a local benefactor who in 1678 left a legacy to help ordinary people access education and help them improve their lives.
At that time approximately two thirds of the population could not read and write. Only the well-off could afford to send a child to schools which charged fees or to hire a private tutor.
Joseph King's legacy was a row of five cottages on Ongar High Street left in trust and the charity receives the rental income from the shops and flats those cottages became.
The income is used to fund the grants.

We support young people with non-means tested grants for university, higher education college, apprenticeships or taking part in special educational events or projects.
The grants can help with extra costs of a course, such as books, resources or equipment or for living costs such as rent, food and travel.
The size of the grants depend on the rental income from the shops are but have been worth several hundreds of pounds in previous years.
The grants are normally paid in two instalments in the Autumn and Spring terms.
Apprentices can apply for help with extra costs such as equipment.
·Young people taking part in a special educational endeavour where they raise their own funds, may apply for a contribution.

If you are studying for an under-graduate or Masters degree at a recognised university in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland you could benefit from a financial grant to help with your expenses.
The grant amount can vary but this academic year 30+ students will be receiving grants of £1,000 each towards your costs.
We don't specify what the grants should be used for nor do we ask students to explain how they will use the grant, as each student's circumstances will be different.
We do ask students to confirm each year they are still in study.

If you are enrolled on a recognised apprenticeship through an approved provider you could benefit from a £500 financial grant to help with your expenses such as equipment, specialist clothing or materials.
Apprenticeships provide an opportunity for young people to launch their careers in a huge range of exciting industries or upskill at various levels.
These “learning while earning” programmes are open to anyone over the age of sixteen and available in over 170 industries, including for example. aerospace, finance and fashion.
An apprenticeship is for a minimum of one year but could take up to five years to complete, depending on age, skills and sector. It combines practical ‘on the job’ training and at least 20% of work time must be spent in training, usually working towards a qualification.
Apprentices are paid at an apprentice or minimum wage rate.

You will then be informed if you are eligible for a grant.
